Meet Our 2015 Coach
Season as Head Coach: First
Alma Mater: Appalachian State (BS '08); Coker College (MS '15)
Coach Paul Rozzelle stepped into the Head Coach postion at CVCC for his first year after Coach Frank Pait stepped down in January of 2015. Coach Rozzelle previously served last year season with the Catawba Valley Redhawks Baseball team as the Recruiting Coordinator and Catching Instructor for a team that finished 41-14 with a third consecutive league championship, a Region X Runner up finish and a set a school record for wins.
Coach Rozzelle comes to Catawba Valley after serving as the Strength and Conditioning Coach at Bandys High School in 2013. He also served as an assistant baseball coach and helped the team to a conference regular season and tournament championship while advancing to the 2nd round of the state playoffs.
Prior to Bandys, Coach Rozzelle was an assistant baseball coach for the Redhawks in their inaugural season in 2010 and handled the Strength and Conditioning responsibilities for the CVCC position players for the 2011 season and eventual 2012 Regional and District championship team. During this time, Coach Rozzelle owned a Strength and Conditioning facility in Hickory where he trained numerous Collegiate All-Americans and professional athletes.
In 2013, Coach Rozzelle was able to be a part of writing a book with Strength and Speed Coaches around the country titled, The Definitive Guide to Youth Athletic Strength, Conditioning and Performance. Upon its release, the book reached best-seller status in two Amazon.com Exercise and Fitness categories – reaching #1 in both the “Injury Prevention” and “For Children” categories.
In 2014, Coach Rozzelle coached the Morganton Militia, a collegiate summer ball team with players from all levels of college baseball and included players from Canada, New York, Florida, and Hawaii. The Militia finished 3rd in the league standings.
Coach Rozzelle also works as the Assistant Athletic Director for the CVCC Atheltics Department and helps oversee fundraising for the department. Paul received his B.S. from Appalachain State University and M.S. from Coker College. He holds certifications in Strength and Conditioning, Youth Fitness, and is a Level II Speed and Agility Specialist.

Your 2014 Head Coach
Coach Ryan Smith is in his 4th season with the Montreat Cavaliers, an NAIA baseball program in Montreat, NC. Coach Smith's responsibilities include serving as the infield instructor, pitching coach, and assisting in recruiting while also holding the responsibility of 3rd Base Coach.
Coach Smith also serves as Head JV Coach at Montreat. Ryan Smith has served as the Head Coach of the Asheville Redbirds Summer Baseball Program of the SCBL for the past 4 summers. During the 2010 summer, Coach Smith led the Redbirds to a division title. During the 2008-2009 season, Coach Smith served as a Volunteer Assistant with Mars Hill College, where he attended and played from 2004-2008, earning a BS Degree in Physical Education with a concentration in Sports Management. While at Mars Hill, Coach Smith's responsibilities included: working with outfielders and hitters, coaching 1st base, and assisting in recruiting. Ryan is originally from Stallings, NC.
Your 2014 Assistant Coaches
Coach Joey Duncan will enter his first season with the Owls after a standout career at Montreat College. During his first 3 years at Montreat, Joey was a workhorse on the mound pitching in 36 games with 29 starts. He totaled a 14-15 overall record with 8 complete games. Duncan pitched 168.1 innings while racking up 144 strikeouts. While this is Duncan’s first season with the Owls, he is in a familiar situation. Joey has been in the SCBL for the past 2 summers, playing with both the former Asheville Redbirds and Morganton Aggies. Joey was selected as an SCBL All-Star for the 2012 summer while with the Redbirds. During his time at Montreat and with the Redbirds, Duncan was coached by Owls Head Coach Ryan Smith. Duncan will graduate from Montreat College in 2014 with a degree in Business Administration with a Concentration Sports Management.
